Pediatric AIDS Chicago

Pediatric AIDS Chicago (PAC) is dedicated to raising awareness of pediatric AIDS in the Chicago area with the long-range goal of eliminating the condition. Founded in 1991, PAC has a Board of Directors of about 25 members and no staff. Board members raise funds, which they grant to agencies for research, education, and social services to improve the lives of children infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. Two years ago, PAC received a million-dollar gift to support its work and establish a new organization, Pediatric AIDS Chicago Prevention Initiative (PACPI).

The Challenge

Identity issues stemming from this transition, as well as declining board membership and fundraising participation, prompted a call to ESC.

ESC’s Response

A board development project was launched to examine the organization’s board structure, analyze the relationship between the board and executive committee, define PAC’s association with PACPI, and develop a plan for board recruitment and expansion.

A team of four ESC consultants carried out a multi-step diagnostic process:

• They met with the PAC president and other leaders to determine needs.

• They interviewed more than 20 people, including the founders and board members of PAC, and the executive director and project director of PACPI.

• They reviewed bylaws, board meeting minutes, board resources, and other organization documents.

• They attended meetings of the PAC board and executive committee.

• They guided the PAC board and executive committee through a self-assessment process and interpreted the results.

• They facilitated a board retreat, working with participants to identify and discuss key issues.

The Results

With the findings from these processes, PAC has made a number of changes, including creating a more inclusive board and committee structure, developing two levels of membership to more clearly define roles and responsibilities, reworking its bylaws, tightening financial controls, and educating members on the relationship with PACPI.

PAC leaders were so encouraged by the improvements that they brought ESC back for training in fundraising and solicitation. Since working with ESC, the organization feels better positioned to fulfill its important mission.
