What Is An Interim Executive Director?
An Interim Executive Director is an experienced outsider and highly skilled
manager who provides strong, effective, short-term leadership to a nonprofit
during the critically important transition after its leader departs. Retaining
an Interim ED helps an agency ensure that the organization remains stable,
prepares for change, and keeps moving in the right direction until a new
permanent ED is in place.
Who Should Be An Interim Executive Director?

Current and former Executive
Directors with deep experience in nonprofit executive management. Do you possess
the core
competencies?

Professionals interested in
continuing learning.
-
Qualified candidates receive
specialized training in necessary Interim ED skills provided by nationally

If you are interested in considering a trained interim for you position,
give us a call (312/580-1840 x324). ESC will match up the experience and expertise of
those in our referral pool with your organization's requirements. ESC will
serve as the facilitator of each project and as a continuing training and
informational resource for the Interim ED and the clients retaining them.
When:
An Interim ED position is strictly temporary, lasting usually between 4-8
months. Interim EDs will be compensated by the client organization at rates
determined on a project-by-project basis. Interim EDs are NOT candidates for the
permanent ED positions. |
Why Now?
With more than 75% of current EDs in the Chicago area planning to leave
their positions within the next five years, more nonprofits than ever will
need strong interim management.
Using an Interim ED assures being able to dedicate the right time and
resources to finding the right candidate for the permanent position while at
the same time strengthening and preparing the agency for new leadership. The
organization can benefit from: a) a skilled and experienced nonprofit
professional, b) an unbiased perspective, and c) a relief from the pressures
to fill a position hastily and all the risks that come with doing so.

Will
the ESC Interim Executive Directors be voluntary positions?
The experienced Executive Directors trained in the Interim ED program will
work in coordination with ESC’s volunteers but unlike them, will be
compensated for their service by the client organization that retains them.
